Wild Planet Trust Paignton Zoo
The latest news concerning the financial crisis facing Paignton Zoo is deeply worrying, according to Torbay MP Steve Darling.
Owners the Wild Planet Trust have revealed they are looking for investors to breathe new life into the zoo and its sister zoo at Newquay. They don’t go as far as saying it is ‘for sale’.
Mr Darling says: “This is a cherished part of our community and we cannot afford to lose it. I am committed to doing everything I can to help protect and preserve this beloved local institution.
“I have long campaigned for greater support for UK zoos and the hospitality sector. I raised Paignton Zoo’s challenges directly with the Prime Minister, called for a national summit, and wrote to ministers demanding action.
“Just weeks ago in Parliament, I urged the government to step up support for hospitality and followed up with a letter to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, calling for a summit to address the growing crisis facing zoos and aquariums.
“Now the need for government action is more urgent than ever. This is a critical moment for our community and for the future of one of the UK’s most important conservation centres.”
