A Torbay Civic Society blue plaque celebrating the life of Agatha Christie has been unveiled at the Torquay church where the world’s best-selling novelist was baptised.

A Torbay Civic Society blue plaque celebrating the life of Agatha Christie has been unveiled at the Torquay church where the world’s best-selling novelist was baptised.

The plaque was revealed for the first time at All Saints Church in Torre following the morning service and as part of this year’s Agatha Christie Festival.

The Victorian church, designed by John Pearson and built with funds from the Christie family, still houses the marble font where Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was baptised on November 20 1890. The family pew remains in place, and the church is fondly remembered in Christie’s autobiography.

The Rev Peter March, Vicar of All Saints,  the Dean of Exeter Cathedral, the Very Rev Jonathan Greener, who preached at the service, Matt Newbury, Creative Director of the Agatha Christie Festival, mayor Barbara Lewis and her consort Chris Lewis, were at the unveiling of the plaque. So, too, was Civic Society president Ian Handford.
