Newton Abbot firefighters battle suspected arson after night of multiple callouts

Crews joined colleagues from five neighbouring stations to bring Kingsteignton fire under control

Newton Abbot fire crews answered three alerts in one night.
After they dealt with a road crash, they extinguished a "proceed too" house fire call and were then sent directly onto a "make pumps 5" incident in Kingsteignton for reports of a derelict building on fire.
Bovey Tracey fire station crew members were the first in attendance. They discovered the building to be well alight with smoke and flames billowing through the roof.
Newton Abbot fire station on their Facebook page commented: "The fire was tackled from several angles around the building that we break up into more manageable sections which we refer to as "Sectors". Several 51mm attack jets and hose reel jets were used to fight the fire and douse the flames. A water bowser was also used at the incident to ensure a constant water supply.
"As this incident moved late into the evening and early hours of this morning, another crew from Newton Abbot was mobilised to relive the crews already on scene. By this stage the fire had been contained.
"However several hotspots remained and the risk of collapse was still present. This crew remained on scene for a number of hours to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and to ensure that all risks could be managed to the best of our ability."
A further crew from Newton Abbot was also sent out on a revisit to the site this morning at 6am to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and that the incident could be handed over safely to the owners.
The station added: "Although we can't fully determine what started the fire, The Incident Commander put the incident back as unfortunately being started deliberately.
"This incident was another example of how all the crews in the local area work well together. A big thanks to our neighbouring stations from Bovey Tracey Fire Station, Torquay Fire Station, Totnes Fire Station, Dawlish Fire Station and Paignton Fire Station for making a start whilst we were busy fighting fires elsewhere."
