The motorway was closed in both directions while Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service deal with the incident.

By 11am Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the northbound carriageway was being reopened, while the southbound remained closed. Motorists are advised to follow updates from police and National Highways.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

At lunchtime the Devon and Cornwall Road Policing Team said the fire was out on M5. The north bound carriageway was opening, but the south bound will remain closed pending recovery/monitoring to ensure nothing reignites.
