Torbay's new bike mayor seeks chain reaction

Meet Torbay's new bike mayor!
A global social enterprise that believes increased cycling will lead to fundamentally healthier, happier and more prosperous cities - has announced Beth Huntley as its new bike mayor for the resort.
Beth has taken up a two-year role to promote the benefits and progress of cycling.
She joins a network of over 140 people worldwide. The organisation behind the network, Amsterdam-based BYCS, believes that we all have a part to play in ensuring our cities are liveable and fit for the future and that every region can benefit from having a champion representing cycling progress within their community.
In 2016 BYCS appointed its first bike mayor in Amsterdam and since then it has grown to the current 140 worldwide. Bicycle mayors aim to accelerate the changes we need to make by uniting people to take action. They look to bring creative diversity with new insights and approaches, from both inside and beyond the world of bicycle planning professionals or the political establishment.
BYCS says the bike mayors “are the human face and voice of cycling in an area which can sadly be lacking in our car dominated society”.
Beth said: “I am very aware that in Torbay we have an extremely hilly landscape which makes cycling challenging. This may be great for those looking to improve their fitness. However, due to my own health issues, I have a pedal assisted e-bike and absolutely love it!
“I really want others to share this joy so one of my aims will be to put on trial events and facilitate trial schemes so others can try out this out. Whether you are commuting to work, nipping to the shops or planning a leisure trip to enjoy our beautiful coastline on trains and ferries; cycling may be the most enjoyable, convenient and healthy way to do it.”
Beth added: “Replacing vehicle journeys reduces congestion, parking issues, noise and harmful emissions.”
Katya Maddison, councillor for Shiphay, Torquay, said: “I strongly support Beth Huntley in her new role as Torbay bike mayor! Cycling is good for your health, wealth, the environment and it’s fun!”
Through the organisation Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay, Beth will be organising events to promote cycling within the area. The first of these is a Torbay Critical Mass Ride for World Car Free Day. This will start at Torbay Velopark on Sunday, September 22 at 8am and finish at Custom Coffee in Paignton.
Riders of all levels are most welcome, although organisers ask that your bike is roadworthy and you feel confident enough to ride with others.
