Torquay has played host to a major national medical event - on hernia surgery.
The second South West Hernia Symposium was successfully held at the Imperial Hotel over two days.
It marks the first time a national-level educational hernia surgery event of this scale has been hosted in the Torbay area.
Organised by Mr Surajit Sinha, consultant surgeon at Torbay Hospital, along with a dynamic young team, Heather Devis, David Robinson, Anisia Jicol, Jack Dovell, Katharine Heath and John Dean, the symposium brought together nearly 150 delegates, including senior consultant surgeons, surgical trainees, and specialist nurses from across the UK and abroad.
The event focused on a wide range of surgical topics, such as complex abdominal wall hernias, groin hernias, parastomal hernias, and challenging abdominal closures.
For the first time, a dedicated trainee research presentation session was also included, encouraging participation, research and learning among the next generation of surgeons.
The symposium was formally accredited by the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, offering Continuing Professional Development points, and was also recognised by both the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh — affirming its academic and professional value.
In addition to the educational sessions, a surgical industry exhibition was held on site, featuring the latest surgical equipment and research developments.
The event also welcomed participation from the British Hernia Society Registry and the global charity Operation Hernia, highlighting the collaborative and outreach focus of the event.
Mr Sinha shared his enthusiasm about the success of the symposium, saying: "Our main goal was to bring high-quality surgical education and expert knowledge to our region. We are thrilled with the positive response and proud to have hosted such a prestigious event here in Torquay.”
The symposium received overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees and is expected to become a regular fixture in the UK surgical education calendar, further putting Torbay on the map for medical excellence.
