Fishing on the beach in Shaldon
Ness Beach at Shaldon is the venue this Saturday (June 8) for children to learn about fishing. Teignmouth SAC are holding a junior competition/teach in from 6pm to 8pm.
They can supply all bait and tackle if required and there will be plenty of senior anglers to help out. It is a free event and a fantastic opportunity for all budding junior anglers. More details can be found on their Facebook page.
Two Brixham SAC Members have been out chasing gilthead bream this past fortnight with Dan Patrick still chasing that magic 5lbd fish, his best being 4lbs 15oz, although, as always, there is the story about the one that got away.
Dave Fortune, however, was the angler to get a better fish. His topped the scales at a fantastic 7lbs 10oz. Not only is that a superb fish but it has also won him the Fish of the month prize kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre. His prize pack will be on its way to him shortly.
Exmouth SAC members have been out and about on a month long Smoothhound hunt with Chris Hurford taking an early lead with a double figure fish. Chris and Archie Sweetland of Honiton SAC have been catching some good fish yet again with both catching double figure Smalleyed Rays and Archie landing a specimen pout of 1lb 9oz.
Charter boats from both Torquay and Brixham are reporting good catches of Pollack from distant wrecks with a small number of Cod featuring in the catches. Mike Spiller took his own boat out to fish Lyme Bay where he caught eight species, including a stunning Red Gurnard.
Newbarn angling centre is fishing well with surface fishing now coming into its own. Scott Coles landed one of the recently stocked grass carp. It weighed in at 21lbs and has officially been named Mellow.
More clearing has been undertaken on Lily Pond, giving anglers a good opportunity to try for some of the trench that reside there and also one of the two grass carp that have been seen but not caught.
The pond may be a bit tricky to fish as it has been seriously neglected in recent years and the fish are not used to angler’s baits.
The latest round of the Tackle trader evening league was fished on Wheel Pond with Dean Bradford winning with a weight of 70lbs 12oz, second was Sam Powell with 39lbs 6oz and third was Andy Coxall with 32lbs 8oz.
Kennick Flyfishers latest round of the Snowbee Top Rod competition was fished at Wimbleball reservoir where Alex Venn came out on top with five fish for 14lbs 6oz, Darren Penfold and Chris Bolt took the next two places.
