Paignton RFC have moved top of the Counties 1 Western West Division after an enthralling 34-31 victory at Penryn.

The Cherries sit top of the pile by virtue of their superior points-scored difference but level with Wiveliscombe and Redruth 2nds, and St Ives just one point further back.

Sitting in the bottom half of the table, Penryn defied that status with a stoic display on their home turf and Paignton were grateful to be four points ahead at half-time, 21-17, with Alex Pozniak, Josh Gillard and Jack Carlisle all dotting down, Brad McKee notching the extras.

Henry Hoare and Carlisle added further tries in the second period but the game was heading for a 31-31 draw before the Cherries snatched victory with a dramatic late drop goal. A great advert for regional rugby and more to come when Paignton host Saltash this weekend.

Paignton Ladies also enjoyed a fine weekend, defeating Cullompton 34-12, while the Colts overpowered Exeter Saracens with a 41-5 victory.

Torquay Athletic have slipped into the bottom two of the Western West after going down to a 21-12 loss at Redruth 2nds, Billy Whalley and Morgan Alcock crossing for the Tics. There was better news for the 2nds, who were too strong for Salcombe, winning 26-5 with tries from James Alcock (2), Harvey Dent and Harry Snell. And congratulations to George Helmore for making his 100th appearance for the Tics.

It has been a case of one step forward, two steps back over the opening weeks of the season for Brixham. Following the outstanding demolition of Devonport Services last weekend, the Fishermen travelled to Exmouth with confidence high, but that soon diminished as they slumped to a 43-12 loss in East Devon. Brixham get back on the bike with a visit from leaders Topsham on Saturday.
