Better results for anglers shore fishing

Shore fishing has produced some better results this week with anglers trying as few different venues.

Local angler Gary Phippard visited Teignmouth and fished a ragworm bait on a pop-up rig to catch bass including a specimen measuring 44cm, about 3lbs in weight. This fish was returned safely.

Ashleigh Ireland visited Seaton and found smoothound up to about 9lbs on a night session. Victor Bannister from Totnes visited the South Hams for the same species. John Davis visited a rock mark and fished with a variety of lures to catch bass and pollack. Christopher Axon visited the Dawlish area with Gary Knott and Gregg Cook, and found plenty of small bass and a small-eyed ray which were all returned.

Boats from Torbay and Salcombe have been out on the wrecks again with Matthew Forester, skipper of Silver Halo, reporting the drift fishing was difficult with wind against tide. He still managed to find fish for his anglers with Nick Bunday landing a bass of 5lbs on a live bait and Hazam a 6lb specimen on a Sidewinder Lure.

Other anglers caught pollack and cod on soft plastic lures. Anglo Dawn from Salcombe found some nice cod and pollack for a group of local anglers, the best fish being a 15lbs pollack. Victor Bannister from Totnes landed a blonde ray of 30lbs 7oz.

The latest advice from the Angling Trust seems to be that it is safe for charter boats to operate with groups of up to five anglers. I have just seen that Pegasus out of Lyme Regis is the latest boat to start up again.

On the freshwater scene, Spring Ponds Fishery at Rocombe reports a good week with anglers catching good bags of carp and roach, the fish falling mainly to pellet and sweetcorn. Kev Parnell took more than 20 carp pond two and an unnamed angler land in excess of 30 carp in pond one. The evening matches are continuing and I should be able to give the latest results next week.

At Newbarn Farm local angler Carl Ward fished two sessions and had four good carp, the largest being a mirror carp of 17lbs 4oz, the successful method being essential cell wafters fished over a bed of boilies and particles in the margins.

The smaller pools are continuing to produce good bags of silver fish and smaller carp.

Newton Abbot angler, rod builder and fly tier Alan Riddel visited Kennick Resevoir for a boat session. He landed five rainbow trout to 3lb 7oz on Grey HD buzzers, one of his own designs. The fish were deep in the water.

Alan is well known and respected fly fisher and has a unit in the Seale Hayne complex, he can often be found at game fairs and country shows around the country and is well worth a visit for his superb hand-built rods and hand-tied flies. You can also find him on Facebook.

I didn't manage to get out this week but as a soon as this is written I will be getting some freshwater gear together for an afternoon/evening trip to Newbarn Farm.
