A 25 year old carpentry apprentice from Paignton is highlighting the training scheme to mark National Apprenticeship Week (7th – 13th February).
Jamie Smith, who lives with his partner and young daughter in Paignton, is based at Linden Homes’ The Oaks development in Chudleigh and has almost completed his NVQ level 3 qualification.
Talking about his apprenticeship, Jamie commented: “I left school and wasn’t sure what to do as a career. I did some labouring, worked with some electricians and then my brother became a carpenter and introduced me to the job.
“I joined the company in September 2017 and spent time studying at PGL Training in Exeter as part of my apprenticeship. I obtained my NVQ level 2 and I’ve almost finished my NVQ level 3 qualification too.
However, Jamie goes on to explain his next hurdle: “Once I finish my course, I will have a difficult decision to make. I’ve loved working on new homes developments and I have been offered a route into the management side, however, I’m also keen to utilise my skill and just enjoy carpentry work.
“Deciding whether to progress my skill or start looking at the management side isn’t easy but it’s a nice problem to have and I wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for apprenticeships – they certainly open doors.”
Managing director, Paul Moran, said: “Apprenticeships certainly provide opportunities and Jamie is demonstrating how to make the most of the experience.
“It’s wonderful to see the ambition and passion apprentices have for their trades. Some will focus on their craft and look to hone these skills and some will progress through to site management.
“Linden Homes is part of the Vistry Group and the chief executive, Greg Fitzgerald, started his career as an apprentice. It’s fantastic that there are a variety of routes into the industry as housebuilding offers many opportunities and a range of roles – from plumber to technical manager, land buyer to marketing assistant.”
