Widow joins Brixham Santa Run in husband's memory

No fewer than 36 Father Christmases will be taking part in Brixham’s Santa Run this year in memory of ‘one of a kind' Jay Morgan.

Jay was hoping to participate in the fundraising event himself, but he sadly lost his battle against bowel cancer in June.

Now widow Nicky will be ‘running’ instead as part of a 36-strong army of family, friends, and members of the community on Sunday, December 1.

Nicky says: “We have entered the big run in aid of Shoalstone Pool, and the organisers have kindly allowed us to do our own fundraising too in aid of Turner Ward at Torbay Hospital and Bowel Cancer UK.”

Jay has been described as a ‘one of a kind’—full of jokes and smiles, a friend to everyone he met.

Nicky said: “He worked at South Devon College and had an amazing rapport with staff and students alike.

“He loved music, football, and all things Christmas! He was one of those people who never lost the magic and true meaning of the season. From Christmas songs and films to markets and a Crib Service on Christmas Eve, he loved it all and was interested in people before presents—although he did enjoy unwrapping his gifts on Christmas morning.”

She added: “We met at 18 and were instant best friends, together every day. In our 27 years together, we never ran out of things to say; even evenings at home in our pyjamas were something to look forward to.

“We have enjoyed every minute being parents to two sons, Joseph and David, and more recently grandparents to Imogen and Luca.

“I am so thankful that we became grandparents young and Jay got to meet them, although it is heartbreaking that he had so little time with them.

“It turns out that our last adventure was moving to Brixham, as only four months after moving to our new place, Jay was diagnosed, and things were never the same again.“

She revealed: “Jay wanted to do the Brixham Santa Run this year and raise money for Turner Ward, even if he had to use a wheelchair to complete the course. But unfortunately, things progressed very quickly, and it wasn't to be.”

We lost Jay on 28th June, less than a year after his diagnosis. He was 44 and had so much more that he wanted to do.

With her 36 Santa Team, Nicky says: “The community spirit shown in Torbay, particularly in Brixham has been a thing to behold. So many local shops have displayed our leaflet, and we have had support from local businesses, which is amazing.

“Our extra fundraising is for Turner Ward at Torbay Hospital, which is where Jay passed away. I can say from experience that their staff and care are second to none. Also, Bowel Cancer UK, which provides support and information for cancer patients and their families.”
