Philip Robinson and Luca Saunders
A new play set to hit Paignton’s Palace Theatre this month seeks to shine a light on the weird but truly wonderful world of two Devon playwrights on the autistic spectrum.
‘The Washing Machine of Destiny’ unravels the minds of Philip Robinson and Luca Saunders, stepping through their passions. From music to technology, washing machines to superheroes and magic, this play has it all.
Whether all one hundred and forty-two scenes will make it onto the stage of each show is another matter. What is guaranteed is a great evening for anyone who attends.
One review read: “The play breaks myths about autism and gives rise to laughs at the same time with its honesty and rawness. The actors bare themselves with courage and grace. A triumph that uplifts the soul.”
The Washing Machine of Destiny has been attracting audiences from 8 to 98, neurodivergent and neurotypical. The show is full of bonkers humour as well as insight and intrigue, taking the audience on a journey with Launderette owner Vinny and Conrad the magician to defeat the evil Controller.
On the way, the pair meet all sorts of characters from mad scientists to an angry French Mayor. There will also be time to chat with the masterminds of the show, with Philip and Luca just being themselves, responding to audience questions and navigating the demands of 142 scenes, acting while saving the world all at the same time.
The Washing Machine of Destiny is also an inclusive show offered as a relaxed performance. There are, therefore, ‘rules of engagement’ included in the show for performers and audience. These are read out by members of the audience in order to make the show safe, accessible and inclusive for everyone.
The Washing Machine of Destiny has come from the imaginations and hard graft of Luca Saunders and Philip Robinson, via neurotypical Director and script wrangler Pippa Marriott. The show lasts 75 minutes, no interval.
