The Met Office has issued a weather warning for ice this week, with temperatures expected to drop to their lowest today and tomorrow.
Two warnings have been issued: one for travel, which remains in force until tomorrow at 3am and one for health, under the new Cold Health Alert system introduced by UKHSA and the Met Office.
For the next two days, the Met Office warns that icy patches on roads and paths could make travel hazardous and injuries could occur from slips and falls.
However, the whole South West has also been issued with a amber warning under the new Cold Health Alert scheme, launched by the UK Health Security Agency and Met Office last year.
The amber warning remains in force until Friday.
An amber alert means that cold weather impacts are likely to be felt across the whole health service for an extended period of time, with potential for the whole population to be at risk and multiple sectors to be affected.
Steven Keates, Met Office deputy chief forecaster, added: “The colder conditions across the UK are likely to be established for some time and will be a key theme of this week’s weather. However, the beginning of the week is likely to see the lowest temperatures of this colder spell, and by the end of next week we should start to see a gradual rise in values, at least for a time.”
