Babbacombe v Brixham
The sun shone warmly to remind us that summer was not yet over, but for the Tolchards Devon Cricket League, it sadly is for another year
After 18 weeks, Sandford are Premier Division champions. Runners-up, Bradninch and Kentisbeare with Cornwood in third.
Paignton’s up and down form continued to the very end with a six wicket win at Sidmouth. Missing Kelly Smuts, who returned to South Africa, the Medlock brothers stood out. Rory taking 6-30 as the hosts were restricted to 115 all out.
Paignton needed just 20 overs to reach their target for the loss of four wickets. Both Medlocks were there at the end. Luke won the game with a six and, in doing so, brought up his half century (51 not out).
Paignton have had a very similar campaign to last year. Much promise shown, but inconsistency ruling. They finish eighth.
Bovey Tracey will join North Devon in A Division next summer. Rounding off an unfortunate season, which started so brightly back in May, with their twelfth straight loss. Saturday’s was by seven wickets at Exmouth.
In A Division, Torquay did what they had to do in an attempt to finish runners-up to champions Exeter. But Kilmington’s eight wicket home win over Plymouth maintained their nine point lead in second, with Torquay finishing third.
Torquay’s tenth win was by nine wickets at relegated Clyst St. George. Harry Passenger took 5-28 and Harry Baxendale 3-24 in Clyst’s meagre 84 all out.
Fittingly, Ruan Terblanche was there at the end (44 not out). Taking his superb league run tally to 1162, at an average of 116.20. He has scored five centuries and four half-centuries and has accounted for an incredible 40.32% of Torquay’s total A Division runs.
Abbotskerswell live to fight another season in A Division, finishing eighth. They were safe going into the final game at home to Tavistock, which was just as well given that it was a 138-run defeat.
Relegated with Clyst St. George are Budleigh Salterton, whose brand new ground brought little in the way of fortune. For their first team at least.
In B Division, Ipplepen beat Barton by 123 runs to ensure their safety. Captain Mawgan Penrice top scored with 59 in Ipplepen’s 191-8. Barton’s batting has been an issue all summer and let them down yet again. Wickets were shared around as they subsided to 68 all out.
The win meant Ipplepen actually finish three points above Barton in seventh. Although, he was away on holiday, the game marked the end of Adam Parker’s tenure as Barton captain. He is stepping down after being at the helm since 2009.
Bridestowe are B Division champions.
Stoke Gabriel rounded off an outstanding summer as champions of C Division West by recording their fifteenth win (only one loss). By seven wickets at home to Cornwood 2nds.
Brixham finished runners-up thanks to a comfortable 211-run win at Walls Hill against Babbacombe and Dartington and Totnes upsetting Ivybridge by two wickets. Only Stoke will be promoted. And its Babbacombe and Darts who drop.
Teignmouth and Shaldon lifted the C Division East title in style by beating Sidmouth 2nds by nine wickets at Hazeldown Oval.
Paignton 2nds are the impressive champions in D Division West. They also signed off in style with a 145-run win over Lewdown. South Devon will still be promoted as runners-up despite a last day home loss to Ivybridge 2nds.
Already relegated Chelston and Kingskerswell said goodbye to D Division cricket with a four wicket defeat at Barton 2nds.
It was a double celebration for Paignton as their 3rd XI clinched the F Division West title after an eight wicket win at Yelverton 2nds.
Next week there will be a final closing piece with personal thoughts on how the season played out.
