Torquay Rotary win Bay Sports title after 33 years

Torquay Rotary win the Bay Sports Season for the first time since 1991, as the club also pays tribute to beloved Past President Tony Berry

There were many who said that it could not be done; some said that the other clubs were too strong; others just laughed and said that Torquay Rotary could not keep up the pace.

They were all wrong: Torquay Rotary won the Bay Sports Season for the first time since 1991!

Regular competitions were held between nine Rotary Clubs during which members competed for the ‘Bill Lloyd Cup’. Bill Lloyd was a past member who loved sport, and his family donated the cup in his memory.

Each Club organised one of the events, which included skittles, ten pin bowling, target golf, shuffleboard (Deck Quoits to cruisers), lawn bowls, Pétanque, short mat bowls, pitch and putt, and darts.

Bowled over by fun and fellowship Torquay Rotary, led by Past President Martin Tucker PHF, fielded twenty-six members who won five of the events and were runners up in one.

The first event was Pétanque which, in the past, Torquay Rotary had always lost, however, this year they thrashed the competition so propelling the club to winning form for the rest of the season: it was a fantastic team effort!

Tragedy as Torquay Rotary lose Past President Tony Berry

Tony had a long and successful career as a Police Officer in Torbay, starting as a trainee officer in Brixham in the 1960’s and then rising through the ranks to become a Senior Police Officer in Devon, including Torbay. He also obtained a Master’s Degree.

He was always very fit and loved the outdoors having climbed most of the hills in the Lake District as well as most of the Tors on Dartmoor.

As a member of Torquay Rotary, and a very keen sportsman, Tony was fully involved in the Bay Sports Season. He was also a very enthusiastic lawn green bowler being President of his local bowling club as well as President for Devon.

He had been very happily married to his wife Betty for over sixty years until his death this April. Tony will be sadly missed as a member of Torquay Rotary especially for the energy, skills and enthusiasm he brought to every sports event that he participated in.
