South Devon angling moves into the autumn season
Two father and daughter duos are hitting the headlines this week and both are from Brixham SAC.
Firstly, Jason and Seren Upham fished a South Devon shore mark where they both landed Club record Couches Breams. Seren had a fish of 12oz for the junior record, whilst Jason ‘s fish was 1lb 12oz for the senior record. Jason also landed a Thornback Ray of 9lbs 3oz in the same session.
The second duo was Dan and Grace Patrick, who targeted Golden Grey Mullet and Gilthead Bream with both anglers achieving their target. Although no fish were record breakers, Grace landed a Gilthead of 1lb 9oz.
Father and son duo of Ben and Ryan Male headed East in search of Undulate Rays, with the trip resulting in a first of the species for Ryan, a nice double figure fish of 10lbs 9oz. Closer to home both Kris Darby and Freddie Lusc landed good-sized Bull Huss, whilst Daniel Teague fishing at Slapton landed a late Smoothhound.
As the week ended, reports came in of Mackerel hitting the beaches in good numbers, chasing Baitfish right up the beach. Since then, storms have arrived and the shoals will probably have dispersed again, time will tell on that one.
The storms haven’t done my fishing any good with two boat trips cancelled, however I did take advantage of a brief lull in the weather and try my hand at squid fishing for the first time and successfully caught 10 decent squid.
This put me in a bit of a dilemma, as my granddaughter wanted to eat them and I wanted them for bait, this time I won.
I often mention that anglers are prepared to travel to catch something special and this week was no different with Gary Phippard heading to South West Wales and fishing the Celtic Deeps in search of Sharks, where his biggest fish was estimated at over 200lbs.
David Mordecai travelled to Cornwall to fish the first ever British Blu Fin Tuna Championships, where his team came fourth overall and winners of the biggest fish. This was an excellent result for a small private team up against larger charter boats who fish for these magnificent fish far more regularly.
With the colder weather approaching, Carp fishing will be slowing down a bit and Mathew Godward was eager to make the most of it before this happened with a 48-hour trip to Newbarn Angling Centre, where he landed 7 fish up to around 17lbs 8oz.
This water is now getting busy at weekends, so booking is advisable on 07848 377114. There is plenty of tackle available in the onsite tackle shop and hot snack are available until 12.30pm
The Fish of the Month winner for September, unsurprisingly, is Ken Skinner for his Stingray, a prize pack from Sidewinder Lures will be on its way to him shortly. Our other kind sponsor is Newbarn Angling Centre, and entries are now being taken for Octobert. Please email pictures and catch reports to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com
