Superb Sunday for local angling

Fabulous fish battle for the top monthly prize

At the London Olympics in 2012 we had super Saturday, and on Sunday in angling terms, it was Superb Sunday.

Almost every fish that was sent to me could have won the Fish of the month prize in its own right. Dan Patrick had a new Brixham SAC record Couches Bream with a fish of 1lb 4oz and Junior Jack Squance of Honiton SAC had a specimen Black Bream of 2lbs 10oz.

Smoothhounds featured prominently, with the best of the week being a specimen of 14lbs 6oz landed by John Parnell on Dorset’s Chesil Beach. Ballan Wrasse are always a good summer species and two good fish were caught, the first weighing 4lbs 60z fell to the rod of Phil Mingo but this was beaten by a fish of 4lbs 12oz falling to the rod of Tom Stebbens.

Thin lipped mullet don’t often feature but Michael Head fancied a change and went out after them, with his best fish weighing a very creditable 3lbs 2oz. Saleem Ali, who is no stranger to this column, targeted Bass from a local rock mark with great success, his best two weighing 5lbs and 8lbs 6oz.

However, the best Bass of the week was specimen of 8lbs 8oz, which fell to a white soft plastic lure fished at night to the rod of Adam Burgess, and this is the fish that takes the prize. A pack from sponsor sidewinder Lures will be on its way to him soon, our other kind sponsor is Newbarn Angling centre, who give a prize of day tickets to a coarse angling winner.

Charter boats continue to produce Pollack, Bass and Cod, with the standout fish being a Black Bream of 4lbs 8oz for Marcin Skora aboard the Brixham charter boat Spot On.

With the weather being settled, many private boats have ventured out, resulting in some good fish being landed, notably Tristan Rowe’s new personal Best Blonde Ray of 24lbs 13oz, with Dan Hale also landing a good Blonde Ray. John Howe fished the banks for Plaice and had plenty of medium-sized fish to the boat.

A date for your diaries is the Angling Trust Wyvern Junior open competition fished at West Bay’s East Pier on Saturday, August 17, entry is free to all aged 16 and under. It will be fished on a catch and release basis with the overall weight deciding the winner. Prized will consist of trophies and tackle.

I must mention this week the Peninsula Classic flyfishing competition, which was fished at Kennick Reservoir and had anglers from as far afield as Australia. However, it was two members of Kennick Flyfishers who stood out on the day. In first place was Alex Venn and the biggest fish of the was landed by John Hern.
