Every year on the first weekend in August, fields outside Brixham are transformed into a living museum of steam, vintage engineering and good old-fashioned fun.
The Torbay Steam Fair is run by the Torbay Steam Rally Group, founded in 1987 by a group of Brixham enthusiasts determined to keep the English Riviera’s annual steam rally alive. Through sheer hard work, expert rally knowledge and local sponsorship, they staged their first event on the traditional August weekend – and it’s been a highlight of the summer calendar ever since.
Today, the fair attracts more than 30 full-size steam engines – including impressive Showman’s engines – and over 20 miniature steamers. Visitors can watch steam-powered saws in action, hear the nostalgic music of traditional fairground organs, and explore an array of heritage tractors, classic cars, motorcycles, military vehicles and stationary engines.
Alongside the machinery, there’s a traditional fairground, market stalls, children’s entertainment, plenty of refreshments and a licensed bar. The organisers also pride themselves on showcasing a new steam engine each year, giving regulars something fresh to admire.
This year’s Torbay Steam Fair once again proved why it’s one of South Devon’s biggest and most beloved family events – where history, heritage and summer fun come together in a cloud of steam.
