Iconic 1959 Devon double-decker makes a comeback

Lovingly restored by Stagecoach, the classic red and cream bus is ready to turn heads across Devon once again

A classic red double-decker bus with a long history on Devon’s roads has been given a new lease of life.

Stagecoach South West has donated a beautifully restored 1959 Leyland Atlantean to the Devon General Omnibus Trust, in a move that celebrates the golden age of local buses and the people who are keeping that heritage alive.

The bus, number 872, first hit the road in 1959 on the Brixham to Newton Abbot route. More than two decades later, in 1982, it was driven by none other than Graham Bailey, now Commercial Advisor at Stagecoach South West and Chairman of the Trust.

“This bus is very close to my heart,” said Graham. “It’s fantastic to see it preserved for everyone to enjoy. I drove this vehicle during my early career, and now, thanks to the work of so many dedicated colleagues, it can continue to be appreciated as part of Devon’s transport legacy.”

Stagecoach has owned the bus since 2011, but it’s thanks to the skill and care of Paint Shop Supervisor Nathan Boustead and his team that the exterior has been lovingly restored — complete with its classic cream lining and eye-catching red bodywork.

Their handiwork means the bus is once again ready to be admired by the public — not just as a static display, but out on the road at community events, running days and heritage shows.

“This isn’t just about a vehicle,” added Graham. “It’s about keeping local history alive and making it accessible. The Trust’s aim is to preserve and operate historic buses that were once part of the Devon General fleet which then enables everyone to both look at and have the opportunity to ride on these buses. The Trust is extremely grateful to Stagecoach South West for making this happen.”

The donation is part of Stagecoach’s wider commitment to community and heritage, and marks another proud moment in the long and colourful story of Devon’s bus scene.

The Devon General Omnibus Trust, a local charity, will now take over the care of the vehicle and ensure it can be enjoyed by future generations — and perhaps even spark a few childhood memories along the way.
