A much-loved Torquay B&B has been crowned AA Bed and Breakfast of the Year 2025, securing its place among the very best in the UK’s independent hospitality scene.
The 25 Boutique B&B, run by owners Andy and Julian Banner-Price, scooped the prestigious national title this week, after inspectors praised its warmth, individuality and “tour de force” breakfast offering.
The accolade comes nearly a decade after the couple opened their doors in 2015, transforming a former guesthouse on Avenue Road into a five-star destination for grown-up getaways. The AA’s report described the experience as “an engaging fusion of comfort, quality and hospitality,” adding that “bedrooms are in excellent shape, stylish and individual, underpinned by an astute awareness of ergonomics and ease of use.”
It’s far from the first win for the pair, who spent seven years running a successful country house hotel in North Wales before heading south to start something “even more special.” Since then, The 25 has been named Visit England’s national Gold Winner for B&B of the Year, received a Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best title from TripAdvisor eight years running, and was famously dubbed “the best B&B in the world” – twice.
Behind the glittering list of accolades is a sharp focus on detail and personality. “We treat all our guests like royalty,” the couple say on their website. “There are lots of thoughtful little touches, from Elemis toiletries to daily homemade in-room treats.”
The B&B’s six rooms are individually styled, with funky décor, air conditioning, smart tech, and a few surprise features that have delighted even celebrity guests. Dame Joanna Lumley is among those who’ve stayed and sung its praises.
Sustainability is a quiet but central part of the operation. From using locally sourced food and washing powder free from microplastics, to installing energy-efficient lighting and encouraging guests to explore Torbay by train, Andy and Julian have been recognised by multiple awarding bodies for their responsible tourism efforts – including Visit Devon, Quality in Tourism, and TripAdvisor’s Green Leaders.
Though each room is different, the level of service and fastidious cleanliness is consistent throughout – a point not lost on the AA’s latest inspection. “Quality counts for nothing without fastidious cleanliness,” they noted. “It is reassuring to see the usual exacting housekeeping, hence ensuring the confidence which is so vital for guests.”
Now, with the 2025 title in hand, The 25 shows no signs of slowing down. “We’ve been incredibly successful since opening over nine years ago,” say Andy and Julian. “Come and see for yourself why we’ve won so many awards.”
