Torquay pays tribute to Dunkirk and Normandy heroes

WWII heroes honoured at moving Torre Abbey service

Those who gave their lives at Dunkirk and Normandy during World War Two have been remembered.
Veterans erected two memorials at Torre Abbey in Torquay in permanent memory of their comrades who never returned to ensure they were not forgotten when the last veterans passed on.
Poignantly the memorials each face towards the beaches where so many lives were lost.
Now the veterans who erected them have passed on, the core purpose of the memorials is being fulfilled by providing a lasting opportunity for remembrance of the sacrifices made at Dunkirk and in Normandy.
The annual memorial service arranged by Torquay Royal British Legion recalls the past gatherings of veterans from the two campaigns to remember and provides an opportunity for those living in freedom today to recall the sacrifices made in the past.
Deputy mayor Hazel Foster and consort Kevin Foster, deputy Lord Lieutenant Nick Powe and armed forces champion Cllr Nicole Amil were among the civic dignitaries.
