Two baby skunks have been introduced to their new home at Paignton Zoo.
The striped skunk sisters, both just over two months old, arrived from Millets Wildside in Oxfordshire on Monday 9 July. The pair are now housed in a purpose-built enclosure opposite the zoo’s Baboon Rock exhibit.
Sam Gray, Team Leader of Mammals at Paignton Zoo, said: “These baby skunks are incredibly endearing with their fluffy coats and curious nature. We're not surprised to see how quickly they’ve become firm favourites with our visitors.”
Although skunks are naturally nocturnal, the best chance to spot them is during feeding times when they are more likely to be active.
The enclosure is located beside the zoo’s Education Centre and offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the species, which is often misunderstood.
Despite their infamous reputation, skunks only use their defensive spray when they feel genuinely threatened, and even then, very sparingly. At this young age, the skunk kits may occasionally spray by accident or when overexcited.
Visitors might also witness their characteristic warning behaviour – a dramatic foot-stomping display intended to deter potential threats.
The sisters, who have not yet been named, will soon be the focus of a public naming competition hosted on Paignton Zoo’s social media pages.
The new arrivals add to the zoo’s diverse collection of animals and form part of its ongoing efforts to promote conservation and education.
