What a year that was.
Councillor Mark Spacagna is taking a look back at a year in office as civic Mayor of Torbay.
From introducing new mayoral cadets and celebrating the 80th anniversary of the local Royal Naval Association as Armed Forces Champion to raising money for Rowcroft Hospice and the Torbay Hospital of Friends, it has certainly been 12 month of variety and waving the Torbay flag.
Cllr Spacagna raised a total of £6,236 for his chosen charities, Rowcroft and the League of Friends, presented in two cheques of £3,118.
He said: “I wholeheartedly support Rowcroft and the League of the Friends and all they do for the people of Torbay.”
A spokesperson for the League of Friends said: “We thank you for the cheque, and we will spend it wisely.”
A spokesperson for Rowcroft Hospice said: “We are so grateful for this generous donation from the Mayoral Fund. It is only through donations such as this that we can continue to provide specialist care and support to our patients and those closest to them.”
Reflecting on his time in office, Cllr Spacagna said: “It was an absolute privilege to serve as Torbay’s Civic Mayor, a role I never imagined I would hold.
“Working with charities across Torbay was truly heartwarming.”
He added: “One of my most memorable accomplishments was introducing the Mayoral Cadets, a legacy that will live on.
“I believe it’s important to recognize the efforts of our Cadet Forces across the Bay and beyond, and knowing that some have taken their experiences with them to serve full-time in our Armed Forces is incredibly satisfying.”
Mark has recently taken over the role of Armed Forces champion for Torbay which coincides well with Torbay's Armed Forces community survey. Working with the Torbay Council lead officer, the data will be examined over the coming weeks and Mark says he will be using the information to bring about positive change with tangible results for the Armed Forces community. This has already started with the introduction of the Mayoral Cadets.
