Latest angling news from Devon
The Flounder competition season got underway at the weekend with the National Flounder Championships on the River Teign.
The first day found 135 anglers fishing, ten of those were juniors and was fished in calm, dry conditions. The fishing was not easy with only 12 fish brought to the scales. The winner on the day was David Machon from Wales with local girl Sophie Cochran catching two fish. She took the overall Junior prize of a Bass Rod and rest as well as the best fish on the Saturday for her other fish. The overall winner was Brett Rabbage his fish being 1lb 14oz. He took the £1250 prize and the optional pool of £305. Details of next year’s event will be made available shortly.
Another big competition at the weekend was the open competition fished between Dunster and Blue Anchor in the Bristol Channel. Many local anglers travelled to fish this event with Honiton SAC’s Archie Sweetland taking top honours in the junior section with two Rays.
A date for your diaries is Sunday January 7th when the competition is the angling Trust Wyvern Division open fished at Slapton Sands. The winner will get £200 with many other prizes from local sponsors up for grabs.
The sign on is at Street Gate at 11am with the fishing form 1pm – 6pm. The winner will be the angler with the best two specimens of different species.
Daniel Patrick managed to get afloat aboard Patricia Rose out of Plymouth where he had a great day fishing the reefs catching Whiting to 3lbs, Black Bream to 4lbs with his best fish of the day a specimen Red Gurnard weighing in at 1.14lbs. this fish is an early contender for our fish of the month competition kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre. The lates competition at Rocombe’s Spring Ponds saw Steve Bridle win with a winning bag of Carp of 60lbs 10oz with Freddie Holding taking second spot and Jason Fay third with wights of 56lbs 8oz and 35lbs 14oz respectively.
