Awesome autumn for anglers who love Bass

Latest fishing reports from South Devon

As autumn approaches many anglers turn their attention to the hard fighting Bass, which, due to current conservation measures, are abundant in our estuaries and around our coastlines.
Dan Hale fished a rough night after this species and, following a small Ray on his first cast, was rewarded with a sizeable Bass. Totnes lure specialist Tony White took Shayne Williams from Bovey Tracey on a lure session, both were rewarded for their efforts with fish. Shayne fished a white soft plastic lure, whilst Tony fished a black and silver soft plastic lure fished ultra slowly.
At the recent Torbay festival, a nice Garfish for Junior Henry Nathan and a Blonde Ray for Clare Barge.
Newbarn Angling centre continues its resurgence with the tackle shop now being open from 8.30am to 12.30pm daily for a basic range of tackle and bait. If you are new to angling, tackle can be hired at a reasonable cost and day ticket rates remain at £10 for seniors with a reduction for juniors.
The water level has risen after the recent rains and with increased oxygen levels, the fishing is good at the moment with anglers catching five or more good Carp in a session. Those who know this water will be aware that water levels always drop at the end of the summer due to a leak. Work has been undertaken to solve this problem and although it is believed to be successful, we will not know until next year how successful it has been.
Adam Hacket, an angler of some 25 years, took his partner Claire Cooper recently and she landed a nice Mirror Carp weighing in 19lbs 7oz, beating Adam’s personal best. Sometime during October, Mirror Lake will be netted and any Carp under 10lbs, as well as silver fish, will be moved to the other lakes. A feeding programme is also taking place, hopefully some of the Carp will soon reach that magical 30lbs.
There are still a few days to enter the October Fish of the month competition, kindly sponsored by Newbarn Angling Centre and Sidewinder lures. Please email your pictures and catch reports to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com
