Latest from Devon angling
This week, my Granddaughter Brooke Reynolds landed what for many is the fish of a lifetime in the form of a Bass weighing 10lbs 10oz. Many anglers, including myself, have never caught a Bass over the magical 10lbs.
I therefore feel justified in awarding her the Fish of the Month prize for August and a prize pack from one of our kind sponsors sidewinder Lures will be on its way to her soon. Entries are now being taken for our September competition and our Freshwater sponsor is Newbarn Angling Centre.
Bass feature in other anglers catches this week included Newton Abbot’s Chris Wagstaff landing a new personal best from the shore of 6lbs 5oz, whilst Brad Martin fishing aboard Torquay’s Silver Halo landed a 6lbs fish on a Joker Slammer cotton candy coloured lure.
Two new boat records have been set aboard Stuart Pike’s boat Orca out of Beer with James Carhart landing a Turbot of 11lbs 9oz and an unnamed angler landing a Tub Gurnard of 7lbs 3oz.
Lyme Bay is fishing particularly well at the moment as Mike Spiller showed when he took his own boat out and caught, Cod, Blonde Rays, Thornback Rays, Jumbo Mackerel, Bull Huss, Conger eels, Gurnard, Garfish and Black Bream. Dave Phipps took his own boat out from Dartmouth specifically to target Thresher Sharks and managed to bring one estimated at 300lbs to the side of the boat where it was allowed to recover before being safely released.
Exmouth SAC members have been busy with a month-long rover competition with the winner being Gary Bowden with a fine Thornback Ray, Chris Hurford and Driss Rami took the next two places. Other catches in the club this month include Small Eyed rays, turbot and Bass with Andy Browning landing some nice Mullet.
Oscar Bromfield, a member of Newton Abbot FA, has been targeting Perch with spinners and landing them well in excess of 2lbs. Their latest all-night match was held on Bradley pond with the winner being Dave Sugden with a bag weight of 18lbs, also taking the prize for the biggest Bream with a fish of 4lbs 13oz.
