Angling round-up from Devon
I write my round up this week fully recharged after a few days away in Dorset with my wife staying in a lovely little apartment on a farm with two pond and Chesil beach close by. My best Carp weighed in at 11lbs 1oz and was caught using my favourite method of floating dog biscuit fished in the margins on a light rod with a centre pin.
Exmouth SAC members have been fishing a monthly Ray rover and are Finding plenty of Blondes, Thornbacks, and Smalleyed with a few spotted thrown in. Teignmouth SAC decided to make the trip to the Welsh side of the Bristol Channel in search of fish for their monthly competition, they tried three different venues, with the best fish being blonde Rays up to nearly 16lbs.
Dave Fortune of Brixham SAC went in search of one of his favourite species, the gilthead bream and landed a cracking specimen of 4lbs 13oz. Totnes lure specialist Tony White fished the open coast with his Daughter Maisie where both had nice fish, Tony had a large Mackerel whilst Maisie landed a nice Bass. Honiton SAC member Colin Bery also fished the open coast, his reward being the best Garfish I have seen this year, this could be good with the Torbay Festival coming up in a couple of weeks.
Breaks in the weather have again been scarce but when the chance has arisen boats angler have been taking advantage. Matt Forrester has been finding Pollack and Bass for his anglers and always keen to fish himself when the opportunity arises with one of his favourite jigs.
One of these opportunities found him landing a nice Cod. Honiton SAC fished their monthly competition out from Beer aboard Sambe and Orca with plenty of species being found including some nice Black Bream,Paul Salmon caught one of the day’s best.
A few drifts over the rough ground produced a few Pollack with the best going to competition winner Steve Buttler with a fish of 12lbs 2oz, a cracking inshore fish and a contender for our Fish of the Month Competition kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre. Spring ponds latest competition saw Kev Wells come out on top with a bag weight of46lbs8oz with Steve Barrel and Gary Dennis taking the next two spots, pellets and sweetcorn were the successful baits. Barry Maddicot a keen match angler and one who likes to encourage juniors is holding a free junior teaching day at a local water on August 26 - contact Barry on 07909 738923.
