Angling reports from across Devon
August is usually the month when the first of the Cod start to show on Chesil Beach and this year is no exception with both Wayne Hand and Nick Fox of Honiton SAC landing them in the last week.
A couple of anglers from Teignmouth SAC also made the journey to Chesil and found Cod. All the summer species are still there, as Paul Salmon showed when he caught a fine Smoothhound. Jud Lascelles, also of Honiton SAC, landed a nice Bass.
There are a few matches coming up over the next couple of months with the big one being the Torbay festival from September 1 – 20. The Wyvern Small Boat festival is over the weekend of September 9 - 10. The Chris Chappel memorial shore competition is on September 24 at Seaton beach with sign-on at 1pm at the Spot On café. The Seaton Carnival open shore competition is on Seaton Beach on Friday, September 1 with the sign-on at 6pm and fishing 7-11pm
Newton Abbot FA waters are producing some fine fish at the moment with Linhay pond producing a bag of Tench for Sally Jasper and Island pond producing a 20lb Mirror Carp for Warren Chapman.
The latest match at Spring Ponds saw Jason Fay wining with a bag weight of 44lbs 9oz and Kev Wells taking second spot with 41lbs. Both were using a feeder and pellets fished close to the far Bank. Third place went to Matt Thomas on his first trip to the fishery.
The CHART Tuna fishing season is nearly upon us. Tuna have been spotted chasing bait fish in good number in Lyme Bay already. It starts on August 14 and ends on December 10. This is a tag and release programme with fish measured to give an estimate of weight and only licensed Charter boat can take part, the emphasis is on fish welfare and making sure all fish are fully recovered before they are released.
If you want to try for one of these huge fish, local boats taking part are Silver Halo, Spot ON and Outlaw.
Entries are being taken for our Fish of the Month competition, kindly sponsored by Newbarn Angling centre and Sidewinder lures. Please email photos with catch details and weight to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com
