Yacht skipper Sam Bainbridge has said thanks to the local lifeboat for a rescue mission with a fundraising BBQ
His Rapscallion yacht was taking part in a race from Torbay around the Skerries, off Slapton Sands, and back when the crew noticed that the bow of the boat was punching more deeply through the waves than it should have been.
When they pulled the hatch open it became clear that the boat was taking on a lot of water very quickly. They responded swiftly to the situation putting out a May Day call. The Torbay All Weather Lifeboat was at the scene in 20 minutes and pumped out the vessel which by then had identified where the water was coming in and had blocked the hole as best they could. The experienced crew made their way back under sail as far as Berry Head but were faced with wind and big seas on the nose so the lifeboat took them under tow back to the safety of Brixham harbour.
Skipper Sam held a BBQ in his garden which was well attended by local yacht club members and raised £751.51 for RNLI Torbay.
The RNLI has also presented Malou Evans with a certificate of thanks for raising £520 by competing in three ultra marathons.
Malou says: "I heard about RNLI Torbay raising money with their own challenges to meet/break a target of 60,000 I went along to speak to some of the crew, got to see where they are based (had a lovely cuppa and a chat) and found out more about the need to raise funds urgently. There are many reasons why someone may need help out at sea, and many of the people the RNLI are called to help are those who are struggling with mental health. My business, Launch Into Life, is about supporting people with their mental health, and so it felt fitting that I help RNLI Torbay to help those people and all people when their lives are in danger."
Malou did Abergavenny Three Peaks in June, the VOGUM 40 mile coastal run and then on July I ran the PIGUM 30 mile mountain ultra - 95 miles with over 15,000ft of elevation.
Through business networking Malou also helped the RNLI find a gold and bronze sponsor as well as her business Launch into Life becoming a silver sponsor of the £60,000 Kilimanjaro Challenge.
