I am starting this week by focussing on young angler Archie Sweetland who recently won our Fish of the Month competition
Archie is a really keen angler and has been honing his skill fishing alongside seniors in both Honiton and Exmouth SAC’s.
He has also fished in the Samalite league alongside seniors and finishing in the points.
Last year he fished for junior team England in the home internationals where they won gold. He was selected again this year and travelled to Wales with team for practice and two days of competition.
The team again won gold with Archie being instrumental in putting the team in that position. One the first day he came second in his zone but on the last day having drawn the end of the beach found that he had a bigger area to fish and used his skills on a difficult day to winkle out a few Bass to put him first in zone. When he is not fishing he can often be found on the beach practising his casting and truing to get a bit more distance. A young man with a big future, well done.
Brixham SAC held a club species competition at Seaton in weedy conditions and found fishing difficult. Winner on the day with three species, Conger Eel, Dogfish and Small Eyed Ray was Kev Madeley with the best fish, also a Small Eyed Ray going to John Hutson. Junior Ethan Hammond also of Brixham SAC, fishing another venue landed a lovely Thin Lipped Mullet of 2lbs 1oz.
Elsewhere Steve Furze landed a superb Bull Huss of 14lbs whilst fishing aboard The African Queen out of Dartmouth and shore angler Chris Wagstaff travelled to the east of the region finding Small Eyed Rays again.
Spring Ponds at Rocombe held their latest Saturday competition at the weekend with top being Chris Packer with a stunning bag weight of 82lbs 8oz, his favoured method being the pellet waggler. Simon White and Peter Hindle took the next two spots with weight of 31lbs and 25lbs respectively.
As many know in recent years there has been a CHART tagging programme for Blue Fin Tuna with the hope that there would be a licensed Blue Fin fishery in the UK. Sadly this licensed fishery is not happening this year but the Chart programme is up and running from August until December again and we are lucky enough in Torbay to have Silver Halo charters approved for this. If you fancy battling one of these giants of the sea then contact skipper Matt Forrester via his website.
