Miss Widdecombe, 78, was due to appear at the inaugural festival in August and was a hugely popular figure locally.

She was found dead at her Dartmoor home at Haytor in July and a 28-year-old man has subsequently been charged with her murder.

Torbay Literary Festival Director Ben Tisdall said: ‘We were all deeply shocked when we heard the news about Ann, and the facts around what happened are still unknown.

“However, we became something of a focal point for people wanting to express their grief, but also their admiration for this unique woman.

“As I have said previously, I did not necessarily agree with all her views, but you could not help admire her strength of character, and also the joy she brought so many people in ordinary interactions within our community.

“We therefore wanted to do something to recognise what she meant to the people of Devon. “

As part of a special ‘Christmas Books Weekend’ - Saturday November 28 - Jeremy Vine and Iain Dale will join Tisdall to talk about their memories of Miss Widdecombe and what it was like working with such a strong-willed person.

Ben said: “We have a number of other authors we have already announced, such as Lady Anne Glenconner, Caroline Quentin, Kathy Lette, Debbie McGee and Ruby Wax. However, I suspect that it will be this event that will get the most support from local people who want to commemorate this special local figure. “

Jeremy Vine and Iain Dale – In Conversation (Remembering Ann Widdecombe) is on Saturday November 28 (2.30pm to 4.30pm), including book signing at The Assembly Rooms, Torquay Town Hall, Tickets are £15/£19/£25.00 (plus booking fee)
