Torquay United cruise past Holsworthy in the Devon Bowl

Torquay United bounced back from their Emirates FA Cup disappointment in emphatic fashion, thrashing Holsworthy 11-0 at Plainmoor to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Devon FA St Luke’s Challenge Cup.

Determined to put last Saturday’s cup exit behind them, United manager Jimmy Ball named a strong starting line-up, with five academy prospects included in the first-team squad. His selection paid immediate dividends as the hosts produced a dominant display, with Cody Cooke and Matt Jay both scoring hat-tricks.

United took the lead in the eighth minute when Cooke calmly converted a penalty. The advantage was doubled shortly afterwards, as Tegan Finn’s corner sailed directly into the net. Although Cooke initially appeared to have applied the finishing touch, the on-loan Plymouth Argyle forward was soon congratulated by his team-mates as United moved 2-0 ahead.

Holsworthy briefly threatened a response after a difficult opening spell, with their first opportunity arriving in the 19th minute. An ambitious volley from 30 yards, however, sailed harmlessly over Zak Baker’s crossbar.

United restored their attacking momentum just before the half-hour mark when Finn capitalised on Holsworthy’s attempts to play out from the back, collecting possession before sliding the ball home from eight yards to make it 3-0.

Isaac Westendorf came close to extending the lead on two occasions. He first failed to get sufficient purchase on an effort after Matt Jay’s strike had been parried, before seeing a subsequent attempt crash against the woodwork.

Westendorf nevertheless played a key role in United’s fourth goal, showing excellent awareness to head the ball into Cooke’s path. The forward made no mistake, smashing home a close-range volley to increase the hosts’ advantage.

Sean Robertson, continuing his return to full fitness after featuring the previous Saturday, then capped an impressive individual contribution with United’s fifth goal. A powerful run down the right flank ended with a composed finish, leaving Holsworthy with a mountain to climb as the sides headed into the interval with the score at 5-0.

United resumed where they had left off after the break, adding a sixth goal just three minutes into the second half. Jay’s effort was not cleared off the line, allowing the forward to ensure the ball crossed the line in the 48th minute.

Dan Hayfield then increased the pressure on the visitors with a well-struck free-kick. Although the Holsworthy goalkeeper got down to his left, he could not keep the effort out as United moved further ahead.

Cooke completed his hat-trick in the 67th minute, finishing from six yards at the back post after another promising attacking move. With double figures now within reach, the forward struck again just minutes later, producing a composed finish from inside the penalty area to make it 9-0.

Despite the sizeable advantage, United continued to press and were rewarded with an opportunity to reach the landmark tenth goal. Substitute Fin Herbert, who scored the winner in the previous round against Bovey Tracey, made an excellent run to create acres of space for Jay, who finished confidently to take United into double figures.

There was still time for one final flourish. With five minutes remaining, Jay completed his own hat-trick to make it 11-0, rounding off a comprehensive victory and ensuring United’s progression to the quarter-finals in emphatic style.
