Torbay Weekly Rewind: A look back at December 2024 headlines

This time last year, Torbay was looking ahead with a mix of optimism, disruption and familiar frustrations.

In Torquay town centre, plans had just been revealed for what was billed as a major boost to the Bay’s cultural scene. The former Bohemia nightclub on Torwood Street was undergoing a significant transformation into Arena Torquay – a new 1,200-capacity venue promising live music, comedy, theatre and family events.

Due to open in late spring 2025, the venue was being positioned as one of the largest of its kind in the region, with substantial investment in sound, lighting and backstage facilities. At the time, it was all potential – bold plans, artists yet to be announced, and plenty of local curiosity about whether it would live up to expectations.

Elsewhere, the weather was making headlines for very different reasons. Storm Darragh battered the Bay, bringing winds of up to 80mph and forcing the cancellation of events across Torbay.

Down on the waterfront, Torquay Harbour was nearing the end of a long-running improvement scheme. New benches were being installed as works approached completion, intended to improve public spaces and make the harbourside more welcoming for residents and visitors alike.

Fast forward to now

Twelve months on, some things have changed dramatically – and some feel strikingly familiar.

Arena Torquay is no longer a promise but a proven success. The venue has quickly established itself on the live events map, with strong crowds and a growing reputation. Its 2026 line-up already includes high-profile names such as Jeff Stelling, Vernon Kay and Martin Kemp, signalling real confidence in Torquay as a destination for major touring acts and large-scale nights out.

The benches, meanwhile, are still very much part of the conversation. What began as a regeneration detail has evolved into a wider row over costs and charging, read here: Row over Torbay’s £12k memorial benches as Bay’s charges outstrip Westminster’s.

And the weather? True to form, Torbay has once again been tested, with Storm Bram bringing disruption this December.
