Devon is bracing for 80mph winds as Storm Darragh is officially named.

The Met Office has issued yellow and amber weather warnings from Friday to Sunday, predicting widespread delays and disruption.

In Torbay, a yellow warning for wind will be in effect from 3pm on Friday, December 6, until 6am on Sunday, December 8. Additionally, a rare amber warning is issued for Saturday, December 7, from 3am to 9pm.

Storm Darragh, the fourth named storm this season, follows closely on the heels of Storms Bert and Conall.

Under the yellow warning, there is a slight chance of building damage, road closures from fallen trees, power outages, danger to life from waves and debris, and longer or cancelled journeys. This warning is categorised as “very low likelihood, medium impact.”

The amber warning indicates a higher risk, with a “good” chance of power cuts, probable building damage, flying debris posing injury or life-threatening hazards, and likely road and bridge closures.

On the government website, the Met Office recommends that people living by the coast should beware of large waves and take care if walking near cliffs. This warning is classified as “medium likelihood, medium impact.”

Around 3pm this afternoon, Torbay Council announced the cancellation of the Bay of Lights live stage acts scheduled for December 5-7 due to safety concerns.

A spokesperson for the council said: “The Met Office has named Storm Darragh which is expected to cause heavy rain and strong winds in the coming days. Due to this, and to ensure everyone stays safe, we have made the decision to cancel our Bay of Lights live stage acts on the harbour for tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday.”

“There are yellow and amber weather warnings for this weekend and this may impact on other events and the Christmas Market. When we know more, we will let you know.”
