Paignton dad runs London Marathon to support children with cancer

A father from Paignton is preparing to run the TCS London Marathon to raise money for children and young people living with cancer.

Jon Hiscoke, 36, will take on the 26.2-mile course in London on Sunday, 27 April, in support of Young Lives vs Cancer, the UK charity helping families navigate a cancer diagnosis.

Mr Hiscoke's son, Ben, was diagnosed with brain cancer in May 2023 and underwent surgery to remove a large tumour.

He said: "As a family, it shocked us all, but Young Lives have been integral to ensuring we had the right support to navigate our way through a new world.

"Our Cancer journey continues, but the strength of Ben has been a true inspiration – his resilience and determination to enjoy life is a lesson for us all.

"To be able to run for Young Lives is an honour and whilst training is long, it’s nothing compared to what Ben and others in his position have been through. Cancer shakes your entire world and changes everything in a heartbeat, but charities like Young Lives provides a vital support network to lean on when you need it most."

Every day in the UK, 12 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer.

Young Lives vs Cancer offers practical and emotional support, including free accommodation near hospitals and help from specialist social workers throughout treatment.

Katherine Sawyer, fundraising engagement manager for Devon and Cornwall, said: “We cannot thank Jon enough for his amazing efforts, taking on the challenge of a lifetime for Young Lives vs Cancer. For every blister Jon has encountered and all the running and training, we are in awe of his dedication and determination.

“From the moment of diagnosis, our specialist social workers provide day-to-day support for each child, young person and family, from guidance to financial support. Our charity relies on donations to fund our vital work, and so we’d love to see the community get behind a final push for Jon’s fundraising. We cannot wait to cheer on Jon and Team Young Lives all the way to the finish line!”

Jon is hoping to raise as much as possible ahead of race day.
