Waves have been aggressively breaking over the sea wall along Torquay seafront as the impact of severe weather continues to be felt across Devon.
The force of the storm has caused flooding on coastal roads, prompting the closure of parts of the Torquay seafront on safety grounds. Torbay Road is currently closed near Torre Abbey Sands, with motorists being rerouted.
Torbay Council said the decision to close the road was due to “extensive flooding” and apologised for the disruption, adding that public safety remained the priority. Highway teams are monitoring conditions and hope to reopen the road once flood-water subsides, potentially by around 3pm, although this will depend on how the weather develops.
Flooding has also been reported in the Meadfoot and Livermead areas, with waves repeatedly overtopping the sea wall during periods of strong wind.
A Met Office yellow weather warning for strong winds and heavy rain remains in place until 9am today, Saturday 24 January. The warning highlights the risk of flooding and disruption to transport across the South West.
Train services have been affected by the weather, and a number of roads across the region have been closed or partially blocked. Members of the public are being urged to avoid the Torbay seafront while conditions remain hazardous.
