Paignton post office 'saved' — but concerns remain over future

And there is no U-turn at Goodrington as PO is axed

Torbay MP Steve Darling has welcomed the announcement that Paignton post office will remain open following months of uncertainty about its future.

But there is still some concern over what that future may look like. Last year the branch was listed among several across the country facing potential closure, sparking significant concern within the community.

Mr Darling launched a campaign to protect this vital service, which included meeting with Post Office bosses and government ministers and initiating a petition in an attempt to save the branch.

He expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported the campaign, saying: “The continued presence of a post office in Paignton town centre is undoubtedly better than the alternative of closure, which was a genuine threat.

“Thank you to everyone who joined me in fighting to protect this vital community asset.”

However, while the branch will remain open, it will transition from a directly managed branch to a franchised model — a change that raises new concerns.

Mr Darling has highlighted key issues, including ensuring the franchise partner is credible and experienced, retaining the branch in a suitable town centre location, and protecting existing employees. He has now written to the Post Office seeking assurances on these points.

He said: “I will be challenging the Post Office to ensure that this transition does not harm existing staff, disrupt services, or undermine the branch’s role as a vital community hub. Transparency and accountability are essential as we move forward.”

He says he remains committed to monitoring developments closely and ensuring the best possible outcome for Paignton residents.

Writing for the Torbay Weekly this week, Liberal Democrat Mr Darling said: “Thank you to everyone who supported this campaign — your voices made a difference.”

And he revealed: “Unfortunately, Goodrington post office will close on April 19, with little consultation or time for local residents and businesses to prepare.

“The Post Office has also decided not to replace the branch, which is unacceptable. I will be writing to Post Office executives and government ministers, demanding answers and pushing for greater accountability. Our community deserves a say when vital local services are taken away.”
