Gary Johnson delighted with Community Day victory

Manager Gary Johnson said he was delighted that his Torquay United side delivered a big win in front of more than 850 extra Community Day fans after a 5-1 rout of Welling United.

Those free-ticket supporters cheered the Gulls on from Plainmoor’s Away End in a 2,500-plus crowd, and Johnson said: “It was great to have a game like that in front of the Community fans – it was a great atmosphere, but unfortunately we couldn’t get the sixth goal they were asking for.

“Welling started well, they had one shot early on and scored, and we had to make sure our players didn’t get too disappointed early.

“But after the first 20 minutes they relaxed a bit more.

“We know what they can do – it’s finding the right magic wand to wave in the dressing room.

“We demoralised them a bit, and we did that with our energy, our work rate and our football.

“I’m pleased for the lads, for the club and for the supporters.

“It’s put us in a fine position in the league, but we’ve got to follow it up.”

United, up to fourth place in the NL South still four points behind leaders Yeovil Town, are away to Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday night.
