Further heavy rain is forecast for Exeter from Thursday afternoon into Friday, with the Met Office warning that already saturated ground could lead to renewed flooding, slower journeys and disruption to buses and trains.

Residents in Exeter are being warned to prepare for further disruption after the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning for rain covering Thursday 29 January and Friday 30 January.

The warning comes as parts of the city and surrounding areas continue to recover from flooding caused by Storm Chandra, with ground conditions already saturated and several roads still affected.

The Met Office says a band of rain will arrive in the South West on Thursday afternoon, moving north-east across Devon during the evening before clearing in the early hours of Friday.

While the rain is expected to last only a few hours in any one location, it is likely to be heavy at times.

Forecasters expect 10–15mm of rain to fall fairly widely, with some areas – particularly in the south of the region – potentially seeing up to 20–25mm, as the ground is already waterlogged, the likelihood of further impacts is higher than normal.

Transport disruption is expected, with spray and surface water likely to make driving conditions difficult and increase journey times.

Bus and train services may also be affected, with delays possible across the network.

The Met Office warns that flooding of a small number of homes and businesses is likely if heavy downpours fall on already affected areas.

The warning has been classified as yellow, meaning the risk of disruption is considered low impact but high likelihood.

The Met Office says the warning has been updated to reflect slightly lower rainfall totals than previously forecast, although the end time has been extended as rain is expected to linger into Friday morning.

Residents in Exeter are being advised to check whether their property is at risk of flooding and to consider preparing a flood plan and emergency kit if needed.

People planning to travel are urged to check road conditions and public transport updates in advance and to adjust plans where necessary.

The Met Office also warns that weather conditions and warnings can change quickly, and people are encouraged to stay up to date with the latest local forecasts as the situation develops.

The latest warning was last updated at 10.35am on Wednesday 28 January.
