Ten-man Torquay United suffer painful defeat at AFC Totton

Torquay United suffered a frustrating defeat on Tuesday night as a costly failure to clear their lines and a second-half sending-off proved decisive against AFC Totton.

Hallett pounced from close range just two minutes after the interval to give the hosts the lead, before Wannell’s dismissal six minutes later left the Gulls with a mountain to climb.

Despite battling hard with 10 men, United thought they had found an equaliser through Deon Moore, only for the goal to be ruled out. Goalkeeper Ryan Gosney then produced a superb late save to preserve Totton’s advantage and secure all three points.

Jimmy Ball named an unchanged starting XI following Saturday’s hard-fought draw against league leaders Maidstone United, but the visitors were immediately tested as Will Fletcher’s early header was comfortably gathered by Toby Savin.

Harry Shield, who impressed against Maidstone, looked lively in the opening exchanges and delivered a cross after Caleb Roberts cleverly dummied the ball into his path. However, the delivery drifted behind for a goal kick.

United began to threaten themselves, with Deon Moore holding up possession before being fouled. Worthington took the resulting free-kick quickly, finding Tyler Hill, whose ball into the area was gathered by Gosney.

Totton gradually began to assert themselves, with Savin proving instrumental in keeping the scores level. On 20 minutes, the United goalkeeper reacted sharply to smother Tyler Cordner’s close-range header, before Roberts threw himself in front of an Oliver Godziemski effort moments later. Shield completed the clearance as the Gulls came under sustained pressure.

Roberts attempted to turn the tide with a powerful strike from around 30 yards, but his effort flashed wide of Gosney’s left-hand post.

Savin was called upon again seven minutes before half-time when Declan Rose stepped up to take a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. Rose’s effort appeared to be heading towards the top-right corner, but the ball swerved towards the middle of the goal and the goalkeeper reacted well to tip it over the crossbar.

United finished the half strongly. Shield skipped past his marker before seeing a left-footed shot blocked behind for a corner. Matt Jay delivered the set-piece, and after Jake Wannell returned the ball into a dangerous area, Roberts fired over as the Gulls searched for an opening goal.

Neither side could make the breakthrough before the interval, but the game changed almost immediately after the restart.

Totton emerged with renewed purpose and forced a corner after Shield cleared behind under pressure. United failed to deal with the resulting delivery, allowing Hallett to capitalise on the loose ball and hammer home from close range in the 47th minute.

The goal was a major setback for Ball’s side, and matters deteriorated further just six minutes later.

As United attempted to regain possession, Wannell caught Reece Fleet with a late challenge directly in front of the referee. The official showed the centre-back a straight red card, leaving the Gulls to chase the game with 10 men for the remainder of the contest.

Ball responded by introducing Jacob Beaumont-Clark, Angelo Cappello, Dan Hayfield and Taylor Scarff as United attempted to find a route back into the match.

Their persistence appeared to pay off on 66 minutes when Moore finished superbly, connecting with a half-volley and guiding the ball into the bottom-left corner.

However, the celebrations were short-lived. The referee ruled that Moore had used both hands on goalscorer Hallett in the build-up, disallowing the effort and leaving the visitors frustrated.

With United pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Totton threatened to exploit the space on the counter-attack. Josh Sims came agonisingly close to doubling the hosts’ advantage when his curling effort struck Savin’s left-hand post.

The Gulls continued to battle despite their numerical disadvantage and came within inches of drawing level with 15 minutes remaining.

Beaumont-Clark delivered an inviting ball into the area, allowing Moore to rise and direct a powerful close-range header towards goal. Gosney responded with an outstanding diving save to his right, palming the effort away to keep Totton in front.

The hosts then threatened to put the contest beyond reach. Charlie Osborne fired wide from the right-hand side before Godziemski missed the target from a similar position a minute later.

Savin kept United’s hopes alive in the closing stages with an excellent one-on-one stop, but the Gulls could not find the late breakthrough their efforts deserved.

Ultimately, Hallett’s early second-half strike proved enough for Totton, who held on to claim a valuable victory. For Ball and his players, the defeat will be particularly frustrating given their first-half resilience and the determination they showed after being reduced to 10 men.

United now have work to do as they look to turn promising spells into results, with defensive concentration and discipline likely to be key areas of focus following a difficult evening on the south coast.
