A group of residents in Watcombe have come together to form the Watcombe Wombles, a litter-picking group inspired by the classic television series about secretive creatures called Wombles, with the aim of making their area a better place to live.

Introducing THE WATCOMBE WOMBLES! A group of residents in the area have come together to improve their community. The wonderful television series about secretive creatures called Wombles aired from 1973 and thoroughly captured the nations heart. Sadly, people are still dropping their litter. So, like the Wombles we are picking up ‘things that everyday folks leave behind.’ Litter is bad for our community, for wildlife and our environment. The Watcombe Wombles want to change that.

The group are passionate about making their area a better place to live. The Watcombe Wombles meet every Friday for a couple of hours of litter picking. The group meet in various places around the area and want to make a positive difference.

The Watcombe Wombles have official permission to use the Wombles name. “We like to think that Great Uncle Bulgaria, Wellington, Tobermory, Madam Cholet, Orinoco and the other Wombles personally agreed the application!”

Look out for us for us picking litter off pavements, dragging crisp packets out of hedges and cans and bottles off grass verges. It’s a very social group and we chat as we litter pick. Friendships are being forged.

There are many other litter picking groups including Babbacombe and St. Marychurch. Volunteers make a difference across all our communities in the Bay.

Over 50 years on, the Wombles are set to make a return very soon. In the meantime, the Watcombe Wombles will be doing their bit for our community.

Let’s take action to make Hele, Barton, Watcombe and the whole of the Bay a cleaner, tidier place. We would love more people to join The Watcombe Wombles. For more information contact Simon Langridge, Community Builder – Hele, Barton and Watcombe [email protected] or 07821 666322. Also, look out for the Watcombe Wombles Facebook page coming soon.

Remember – You’re a Womble!
