TOADS are aiming big again.
The Stage Musical Company has brought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the Torquay stage for the first time following recent successes including Shrek, Grease and 42nd Street.
The world-famous Willy Wonka is opening the gates to his mysterious factory… but only to a lucky few. Young Charlie Bucket and four other golden ticket winners will embark on a life-changing journey through Wonka’s world of pure imagination including chocolate waterfalls, nutty squirrels and the great glass elevator, all to be revealed by Wonka's army of curious Oompa-Loompas.
Director David Youll said: "Initially I had seen the original West End production, which was also the version that toured the UK and Ireland, and to be honest, it didn’t quite grab me. But then I read the script for the Broadway version, and it was completely different.
"After its run in London, the show went to Broadway, and it seems they decided it needed more than just a tweak—they reimagined it. The new version is faster-paced, funnier, and full of energy. They’ve added brand new songs alongside the classics you know and love, and the whole show just races along. I think it’s brilliant.
"The difference between the original London version and this one is honestly remarkable - and that’s what made me excited to take it on. Where else can you get two hours of pure joy, with a smile on your face and laughter in your heart? We’ll entertain you from start to finish."
Jon Bisby who plays Willy Wonka, said: “I think what makes this show special and different from others I’ve done is the truly larger than life characters that you just can’t help but laugh at. People should come and watch because the quality of the cast is outstanding. Audiences are in for a treat with great singing."
TOADS Chair Amanda Jenkins adsded: "This is a first for our company and a production that offers a fresh and enchanting experience for audiences of all ages.
As a dedicated community theatre group, TOADS SMC is committed to nurturing and showcasing emerging local talent. The enthusiasm and passion of our performers are evident in every scene, and we are delighted to present their work on the stage of the Princess Theatre, Torquay - a venue that continues to be a cornerstone of artistic expression in our region. TOADS SMC remains steadfast in its support of live theatre and the arts. We believe in the transformative power of performance and are thrilled to share this magical production with our community.”
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory runs from Wednesday July 2 to Saturday July 5
