Winter scene at Holsworthy GC
It is cold, wet and windy, pretty much the worst time of year to be playing golf, but spring is not too far away and the lush fairways and greens of Devon are awaiting our return.
To get you in the mood, we are taking on the challenge of building the ultimate golf course, but there are strict rules to this game.
We can only use a golf course once and their chosen hole number must correspond to the actual hole on that course. For example, the ultimate opening hole in Devon must also be the opening hole on that chosen course, and then the same course cannot be used again throughout the round.
Your challenge this summer is to play them all!
The ultimate 12th hole in Devon golf
#12 – Holsworthy Golf Club – Par 4
Dunstans Lookout ay Holsworthy GC is a classic risk-and-reward mid-length par 4 that divides opinion — some players absolutely love it, others see it as a nemesis. Its scoring difficulty is reflected in its low stroke index.
Straight off the tee, there’s a premium on accuracy. A clean drive sets you up well, but stray shots can quickly lead to trouble.
If you hit it too far right from the white tees, the ball can run into a stream — so judging length is key.
A slight fade that drifts right on a windy day may still find trouble — either in the trees or even in the 3rd fairway on the adjacent hole — so controlling your ball shape matters. Pull it left and you risk a ditch that penalises wayward tee shots.
The fairway funnels into a position that makes a straight and well-controlled second shot crucial. Clear the bunkers with your approach and you’ll have a reasonable birdie opportunity — but two good shots and two putts feel like heaven here.
The hole will play differently with the wind, which can elevate both challenge and strategy. A solid tee shot that avoids the natural hazards sets up the green — but if you miss the fairway, recovery becomes tricky and bogey or worse isn’t unlikely.
In summary, Dunstans Lookout is a beautifully framed but subtly demanding par 4 where precision and course management pay off more than brute distance.
