The new rugby season is fast approaching and Torquay Athletic Rugby Club will have a new leader on the field.

Homegrown talent George Helmore has been selected as the new captain of the Tics first-team and it is an appointment that just adds to the excitement and anticipation ahead of a new campaign.

Tics Head Coach Dan Williams said: "George has been developed through the club's youth system and transitioned into the club's 1st XV. He has played for the club through thick and thin and has always laid his body on the line any time he has donned the black and white shirt.

“This appointment of George as Captain not only signifies the start of another chapter for this club, but a long-term appointment in my eyes. George leads by example week in, week out. His love for the club and relentless work rate speaks volumes for the sort of person he is. There has been a lot of thought put into this, and the decision has not been taken lightly, but I know George already has the respect and backing from both the wider management team and playing group.

“George won’t need luck because of the way he applies himself… but we know he will lead the club well in its next successful era."

After storming to promotion with an immensely powerful campaign last year, the Tics begin their new season in the Counties 1 Tribute Ale Western West Division with a trip to Plymstock Oaks on September 6, quickly followed by a local derby at Newton Abbot a week later.

The first home game is scheduled for October 4, when Barnstaple Athletic will be the visitors and make a note for the Christmas diary, as the Tics host Paignton on December 20 in a guaranteed festive cracker.
