The home of Newton Abbot Spurs
The South West Peninsula League is back underway for the new season and there were some intriguing results from the opening weekend.
There was a heavyweight clash to kick things off on Friday evening, as Newton Abbot Spurs hosted Okehampton Argyle at the Rec. In a clash between two sides expected to challenge for honours, Newton Spurs took the points in a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from Coby White and Brad Crocombe.
Torrington travelled to Axminster Town for a clash between two sides who struggled last term, and it was the North Devon side who dominated, winning 4-0 with goals from Callum Deemer, Adam Copp, Max Peach and Ben Musselwhite.
Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police were also big winners, taking apart Cullompton Rangers with an impressive 6-1 triumph. Former Brixham duo Reece Somers (2) and Kieran Parkin were on target for Stoke, along with Ben Aldous (2) and Saul Vanes.
A solitary strike from Ollie Aplin was enough to give Bovey Tracey a scruffy win at Bishops Lydeard, while a late Jake Chesworth header gave Ilfracombe Town a 1-0 win over Teignmouth.
Torridgeside succumbed to a 3-1 home loss to league newcomers Ilminster Town and there was a 1-1 draw between Bridport and Crediton United. Holsworthy, the one Devon side competing in the West division, drew 1-1 at home to Launceston.
