Paddle time is the best of times
As parents across the UK look for ways to reduce screen time and get kids outdoors, one activity is making waves: stand-up paddleboarding (SUP).
Whether it’s a local lake, a quiet cove, or a scenic stretch of coastline, paddleboarding offers a fun, accessible way to spend time and explore nature together. Certified B Corp Red Equipment has put together advice on what beginner paddleboarders need to know, with tips especially for families this summer.
Try it on holiday or find a local group: While paddleboarding is a fun, memorable activity to try on holiday, there are so many places closer to home where you can give it a try. Paddle UK – the country’s national governing body for canoeing, kayaking and other paddlesports – has an interactive map to help you find your nearest club, where you can borrow a paddleboard for a taster session.
Start slow: It’s perfectly normal to begin kneeling until you find your balance. Many beginners, including kids, are able to stand on their first outing.
Safety first: A paddleboard leash, inflatable airbelt or life jacket are essential. Red Equipment offers lightweight, compact safety gear perfect for families on the go.
Dress for success: Wetsuits are ideal for cooler days, while a rashguard, shorts, and a hat will work for warmer weather. Water shoes or swim socks help with grip and comfort. Make sure you use sun protection, as UV light reflects off the surface of water, putting you and your little ones at a higher risk of sunburn.
Pack smart: Bring a dry bag to keep clothes dry and make snacks easy to reach on the water. A waterproof phone pouch is also great for capturing those family moments without risking your tech.
Choose the right board: A wider board offers more stability and is ideal for beginners or families, with room for younger kids to ride up front. For even more flexibility, tandem boards are available, designed for two paddlers or a parent and child.
Rachel French at Red Equipment said: “This summer, if you’re looking for something new to try that gets you outdoors, why not give stand up paddleboarding a go? It’s an excellent form of exercise that’s accessible for people of all ages and levels of fitness.
“Paddleboarding is perfect for camping trips or weekend getaways. Our inflatable boards pack down small, making them easy to transport, even in the boot of a car. It's a fantastic way for families to disconnect from screens and reconnect with each other and nature.”
