Torquay United youngster on the scoresheet against Hornchurch
In the end, Matt Carson’s tidy finish late in the first half proved decisive in Torquay United securing a crucial 2-1 win at home to Hornchurch on Saturday.
After a gruelling 2-2 midweek draw at Worthing and a painful journey home, the Gulls were understandably weary on the weekend, eventually holding on to the three points with a dogged display, Carson’s goal adding to the earlier strike from Fin Craske.
It rounded off a perfect week for the young wing-back, who is naturally thrilled to be back in the team as the promotion race heats up.
“It was a massive three points, as are any three points at this stage of the season, whether you play well or not,” he said. “It wasn’t our best performance but we can’t complain. I’ve been out for a while, so just to come back and contribute to the team is what I try to do.
“It was a strong performance from the lads on Tuesday night [at Worthing]. We got what we deserved but the journey back was horrific. Despite that, the lads trained well on Thursday and Friday to get the result [on Saturday].
“Sometimes it is a bit sweeter to win playing the other side of the game, it brings the lads together. I’ve loved being involved in the last three games and trying to do everything I can.
“I trust the manager and his decisions, and hopefully I managed to show I can do. We have to do our jobs every week and let the table speak for itself.”
