Super Sam on target for the Gulls
It took a deflection and probably not a contender for goal of the season, but Sam Dreyer’s late opener proved crucial for Torquay United in securing a dogged 2-0 victory over Eastbourne Borough at a packed Plainmoor.
After a superb save from James Hamon had kept the Gulls level in the second half, United’s superior fitness took control in the latter stages, as Dreyer struck with five minutes left on the clock and substitute Omar Mussa added some stoppage-time gloss to a valuable three points.
“It was a good day, a good team performance. We needed a reaction [from the defeat at Maidstone] and we definitely got one,” said Dreyer.
“It was a must-win game and there have been a few times this season when we’ve finished strong. We’re a fit team and we will keep on going.
“It was on target, so I’m definitely claiming that one. Hammy made an unbelievable save, we can’t forget that, and we’ve got enough on the pitch to win the game.
“The support we get is unbelievable, every week. Even away from home, we’re bringing 800 people. I know everybody says it, but they make such a massive difference.”
