Matt Holmes on track for victory
Impressive result for Mid-Devon Cycle Club youngster
Mid-Devon Cycling Club teenager Matt Holmes pulled off an impressive victory against adult rivals to win the latest Newport Track League Open ‘Omnium’ meeting.
The Omnium includes Scratch, Elimination and Points races, and Under-16 rider Holmes stamped himself on the competition with a solo attack with three laps to go to win the Scratch leg.
He followed up with a comfortable win in the Elimination race and, although he was a marked man in the final Points discipline, his fourth place was more than good enough to clinch overall victory.
Riders like Holmes, and team-mate Bayley Woodger, regularly travel to South Wales to train and race on the Newport Track, and that commitment is paying off.
MDCC riders featured prominently at the annual South West Cyclo-Cross League Awards, held this year at Exeter City FC.
James Allen (U14), Lara Dix (Junior) and James Bovey (Vet50) all won their age-groups over a gruelling winter’s racing.
Nicky Quant was second in the Ladies Vet50 group, and there were third places for Freddy Simcock (U12), Meryn Kitching (U16) and Emily Simcock (Vet40).
Kitching and Dix won the League’s Most Improved Rider awards, while Simcock was presented with the new Spirit Of Cross trophy.
