Two points dropped for Torquay United
Torquay United remain top of the National League South, despite being held to a 2-2 draw at lowly Weymouth on Boxing Day.
A tight first period with neither side showing much Christmas spirit in a ferocious encounter eventually edged the way of United, with a superb sweeping pass from Oscar Threlkeld picking out Will Jenkins Davies to continue his impressive recent scoring run.
The Gulls entered the break with their noses in front but Weymouth, revitalised under new manager Warren Feeney, drew level with a neat finish from Brandon Goodship just five minutes after the restart.
United quickly restored their lead through Cody Cooke, converting a free-kick from Jordan Young, but the spoils were ultimately shared due to the lively Goodship curling a late leveller.
“We started the game great,” said Wotton, “but really disappointed with the two goals we conceded. In the last 20 minutes, we stopped doing the basics well and giving away silly fouls.
“When you’ve been leading twice in the game, it feels like two points dropped. The huge positives are we keep the unbeaten run going and there were some really good performances.
“Weymouth aren’t going to quit and we matched that, but lacked the quality to get the third goal and kill the game off. There were big spells in the game where I felt like we were on top and it was definitely there to be won.
“We’ve played against Hemel with a new manager and now Weymouth with a new manager, and it makes a difference. We needed the third goal and we had ample opportunity in great areas, but our final decision wasn’t good enough.
“The fans were amazing and we need that. We’re still a work in progress, we’re learning and I think it’s really good that we’re disappointed [with a draw].”
